While just a few performances remain, there's still time to catch this worthy production at Gretna.

Rand is parked inside the complicated, and stiflingly hot, puppet for about an hour, moving its various parts. Rand's invisible role gets pretty challenging in the second act, when the ever-growing plant - it's a rental - becomes truly enormous. Adams, who provides the off-stage voice for Aubrey II, and puppeteer Ben Rand, who persuasively brings the always hungry plant to life in various sizes. Kudos also go to Joe Hager, who plays a variety of characters, most memorably a sadistic dentist named Orin who expires while wearing a nitrous oxide-filled helmet and singing "Now (It's just a Gas)." A well-earned salute also has to go to Derek J.

Gretna's well-mounted production stars Tyler Bellmon and Erica Lustig as Seymour and Audrey, respectively, while Broadway veteran Joel Briel is suitably slovenly as luckless flower shop owner Mushnik. The manipulative plant's motivations are a little less clear, but seem to involve eventual world domination. Ashman contributed memorable lyrics for more than a dozen songs, particularly "Don't It Go to Show Ya Never Know," "Call Back in the Morning," "Suddenly Seymour" and the iconic "Feed Me (Git It)." While the show veers away from the original movie in several aspects - including moving it from Los Angeles to New York City - it remains true to the spirit of the original, in which Seymour slowly is lured into committing murder to satisfy the unusual plant that is making him rich and famous. It was just the second collaboration for a team that would go on to create award-winning scores for Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin." But the black comedy's Faustian overtones - young Seymour essentially sells his soul to the evil plant in return for getting both fame and a shopgirl named Audrey - somehow kept "Little Shop" from simply disappearing like so many of Corman's quickie horror flicks. Shot in black and white with laughable special effects, its main redeeming feature was a memorable cameo by a young Jack Nicholson as a masochistic dental patient. "Little Shop of Horrors" is based on an old B-movie of the same name cranked out in 1960 by schlockmeister Roger Corman. Along with Totem Pole Playhouse's upcoming production of "Godspell," it is among the few remaining Broadway-style musicals that will hit central Pennsylvania stages this summer.

This show, complete with a giant, singing carnivorous plant named Audrey II, runs only through Saturday at the professional summer stock theater. An excellent production of this tuneful 1982 show from the brilliant team of Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman is currently on stage at Gretna Theatre in the small Lebanon County borough of Mount Gretna.
